STUDENTS AND NEW GRADS FROM UK’S TOP UNIVERSITIES STILL BELIEVE THE UK WORKPLACE TO BE HOMOPHOBIC AND RACIST

A staggering 76% of students and recent graduates still have concerns about workplace equality in graduate roles within UK companies.

A recent study conducted by Boutique Marketing for the UK’s leading equality and inclusion jobs event, the DIVERSITY CAREERS SHOW, happening in London this weekend, surveyed over 200 students and recent graduates from diverse backgrounds including sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender and disability from the UK’s top 20 Russell Group Universities.

---

The research showed that the final year students interviewed have serious concerns about their diversity at interview stage.

> 63% of students from ethnic backgrounds believed that their ethnicity could affect their ability to secure a job

> 89% of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBTs) would hide their sexual orientation, in a hypothetical situation of it being brought up during an interview

 > 82% of students with physical disabilties believed that their disability is a serious barrier in the selection/recruitment process as compared to other candidates

78% of final year students believed their diversity still pose a barrier to entry, although companies are promoting equality and inclusion within their organisations

---

Relatively, these beliefs were pretty much echoed by new grads, who have more experience of the recruitment process and are about to enter the workforce.

> 58% of new grads from ethnic backgrounds believed that their may be issues around ‘fitting in’ at their new job

> 84% of LGBTs stated they would struggle being ‘out at work’ in their early career

> 68% of LGBTs believed that having their sexuality open may impair their prospect for promotion

73% of new grads believed that they would their career paths will be more challenging because of their diversity.

76% of all respondents believed that homophobia and racism is still rife in the UK workplace.

68% of all respondents believed organisations needed to do more to narrow the equality gap

Other interesting points to note:

A staggering 83% of respondents believed that gender inequality was still rife. 58% of these were male respondents.

Interesting qualitative discussions arose around the issue of “double glass ceilings” and especially among lesbian respondents - but also those who are gay and of non-caucasian ethnicity.

GOOGLE TO OFFER ONE-TO-ONE CV ADVICE AT THIS FRIDAY'S DIVERSITY CAREERS SHOW

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ONE OF THE WORLD’S BEST RECRUITERS TO OFFER PERSONAL 10-MINUTE CV CLINICS

www.diversitycareersshow.com

Tech superbrand GOOGLE are offering over a hundred lucky candidates of this year’s DIVERSITY CAREERS SHOW one-to-one CV workshop sessions with members of their HR team. These invaluable sessions were trialled at last year’s show and proved a storming success.

On a first come, first served basis, the inclusive recruiter will have staff on booths throughout the day to meet with diversity candidates and help them build a strong CV for their future careers. Sessions can only be booked on the day of the show.

The organisers are recommending that candidates come down early to ensure they bag one of these fantastic sessions as they are extremely popular and will book-out fast. The show opens at 10am and runs through to 5.30pm.

THE UK’S BIGGEST DIVERSITY CAREERS EVENT

The country’s most influential and inclusive employers are taking a stand on diversity in the workplace by exhibiting at this year’s Diversity Careers Show - taking place on Friday 21st October 2011 at the New Connaught Rooms in Covent Garden.

The show, now in its third year, seeks to be bigger and better than ever before, with investment banking giant Societe Generale as headline sponsor, supported by private and public sector champions of diversity, Google and the RAF. The show is organised by leading LGBT media and exhibition organisation Square Peg Media in partnership with the renowned gay, lesbian and bisexual charity, Stonewall.

Last year saw over 2,500 candidates - students, graduates and other jobseekers alike attend the show and hundreds of delegates have already registered for this year’s show; as well as repeat exhibitors from last year and fantastic new recruiters looking to meet the show’s pool of talented graduates from diverse backgrounds. The show primarily targets LGBT candidates but welcomes jobseekers from all backgrounds.

We’re pleased to welcome our fantastic exhibitors, from sectors spanning Investment Banking, Law, Retail, Property and Public Sector to this years show. Exhibitors to date include big names like American Express, Asda, Ernst and Young, the FSA, HSBC, London Fire Brigade, National Audit Office, Waitrose and London 2012 among others well known brands and organisations. For a full list of exhibitors, please visit the website.

NEW BENEFITS FOR ATTENDEES

In addition to recruiters exhibiting on the day, this year’s show will also showcase a stimulating and informative seminar programme, championed by Stonewall to help candidates with key topics that challenge the LGBT community in the workplace.

We’ll also be increasing the capacity of our exceedingly popular one-to-one CV workshops, to help candidates get dedicated advice about their resumes from real-life recruiters.

We’ll also be implementing a student zone, specially for students and those about to graduate to help them get a foot in the door. Feedback shows that students in particular may feel a little intimidated by the size of the event, so we’re looking to provide them with specialised help, guidelines, CV workshops, networking facilitation, interview clinics, dedicated help, hints and tips to help them make the most of the show.
